“Our sense of color is formed by contrasts. A white panel may seem warm if hung on a blue wall, or it might seem cool if seen on a warm background. There are no absolutes. In the Flower Bed, changing light on white two-dimensional flowers juxtaposed with a changing field of light in the background challenged the viewer’s perceptions of what color one actually saw.”
